Getting Started With JADE

IF YOU HAVE 30 MINUTES, TRY THE FOUR INTRODUCTION TUTORIALS

These tutorials give you an overview of the JADE development environment and teach introductory JADE skills.

The tutorials consist of:

• Tutorial 1: An overview of the JADE development environment. A simple Library application forms the basis of the examples.
• Tutorial 2: Adds some further capabilities to the Library system including multi-user considerations.
• Tutorial 3: Introduces the Erewhon Investments example system. You will create a view of the classes using the JADE Report Writer Configurator and then design and run a report. The Erewhon Investments example system is supplied with JADE, or you can download it here.
• Tutorial 4: Introduces the use of Rational Rose with your JADE Development Environment.
  
  Note: Rational Rose is not supplied with JADE and must be purchased and installed separately.

IF YOU HAVE A COUPLE OF HOURS, watch the Tutorial videos

The Tutorial Videos provide a short self-study course designed to give you an appreciation of the capabilities of the JADE Development Environment. Some previous programming experience is required. The following videos are available:

• Tutorial Video 1: Learn how to logon to JADE, create a schema, write method code and use primitive types (approx 13 mins).
  
• Tutorial Video 2: Learn how to define classes, how JADE manages objects, how to use the object inspector and about transactions (approx 12 mins).
• Tutorial Video 3: Learn how to use the debugger, how to reorganise the database, and about inheritance and polymorphism (approx 13 mins).
• Tutorial Video 4: Learn about the root object and its uses, constructor methods, collections and how to iterate them (approx 15 mins).
• Tutorial Video 5: Learn about inverse references and defining one-to-one, one-to-many and many-to-many relationships (approx 13 mins).
• Tutorial Video 6: Learn about painting screen forms and controls, coding event methods for forms and multiple document interface design (approx 15 mins).
• Tutorial Video 7: Learn how a JADE system works, about the JADE Monitor, how to define applications and how to extract and load schemas (approx 15 mins).

IF YOU HAVE A FEW DAYS, TRY THE DEVELOPER'S COURSE

• The JADE Developer's course is an extensive self-study course designed to guide you through all the main areas of JADE. Learn how to build a multi-user JADE application using good design and performance practices.
• Some familiarity with object-orientation and event-driven programming will help.
